History

In 1947, the first meeting of the Nursery Association Secretaries was called by the American Association of Nurserymen to be held at the AAN convention in Boston. John D. Siebenthaler, secretary for the Ohio Nurserymen’s Association at the time, spearheaded the idea. Dr, Richard White, Executive Secretary of AAN sent notices and conducted the meeting that included 20 state and regional attendees. Miles W. Bryant, Secretary of the Illinois State Nurserymen’s Association was elected the first President. John D. Siebenthaler was elected Vice President, and Jack Lincke, Executive Director of the California Association of Nurserymen, the only state association to have a full-time paid executive secretary, was elected secretary of the group.

The purpose of the association was to discuss the mutual problems that confronted secretaries in the conduct of the affairs in their association and to improve, thereby, their services to their members. Sound familiar? Same as today!

Jack Lincke was replaced as Secretary by Bernard Ward, Secretary of the Michigan Association of Nurserymen in 1948-1950; followed by Paul Hofmann of Maryland in 1950; Clyde Heard of Iowa in 1952; Frank Turner of Ohio in 1953-55, and Erwin Whitham of Connecticut, 1955-60. In 1960, the association employed Charles Barr of Barr Associates in West Haven, CT as paid Executive Secretary to manage its affairs. He served continuously until 1974 when Honore Hacanson, Executive Secretary of the Washington State Nurserymen’s Association, replaced him. Jane Barry, Executive Director of the Montana Association replaced Honore in 1977 and turned the secretary's job over to Dan Barnhardt in 1989. John Bragg, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Nursery & Landscape Association, became the organization’s Executive Director in 1995. In 2004, Beverly Gelvin of North Carolina Association of Nurserymen was elected as the Executive Director of NLAE.

The name of the association was changed from the Nursery Association of Secretaries to Nursery Association Executives of North America in 1971. The name was further modified in 1997 when the organization became the Nursery & Landscape Association Executives of North America.
